Hello, I'm Gabrielle McGrath.
Welcome to RedPeg Eco Studio.
My passion and focus for a long time was steel construction based sculpture - which I exhibited regionally and nationally for about 10 years after graduating from The National Art School (ESTC) in Sydney.
Jewellery and body adornment has always been a great love, so its no great surprise I find myself here, as a jewellery artist.
Having never gained any formal training in Jewellery design and with my sculptural metal smithing background, its often said I have an unconventional and unorthodox approach to working with precious metals.
My work is made with a sculptors eye, hand and thought process and therefor aesthetically are more of an artwork, constructed in the same fashion as a much larger piece.
To me, my jewellery designs are essentially mini sculptures.
My jewellery and wearble art is handcrafted with an uncontrived aesthetic. I find form through texture and pattern, letting the materials inherent nature shine through. Learning through the freedom of play has meant I’ve developed a distinct style, with a unique aesthetic.
Passerbys are drawn into my shopfront studio with the sound of hammering and the sight of my torch flame forging the metal into shape. It can sometimes get very noisy. Far removed from the glitzy, brightly lit showrooms of most modern jewellery shops.
I love working with metal (sterling silver and gold) and I embrace the use of ethically sourced materials.
I’m dedicated to creating art with minimal environmental impact. I re-cycle, up-cycle and salvage. Natural alternatives to chemicals are implemented in the cleaning, polishing and oxidizing processes. Any metals I buy are recycled from commercial and industrial enterprises, purchased from a dedicated Australian supplier. There is no waste generated as all scrap goes back in the melt pot, effectively creating a closed loop within the studio.
I love giving new life to old jewellery. Melting down old broken and worn out pieces to create something new and wearable again.
I’m often asked to re-imagine precious jewellery. Jewellery that is outdated or that has lived life in the bottom of the jewellery box, never worn, into something that the person can wear and enjoy everyday.
Or consolidating years of collected old jewellery pieces into one unique piece, like a big chunky bangle. Knowing it’s all of your old sentimental jewellery right there on your wrist is a heartening thing for the wearer.
I love the fact precious metal can continuously be recycled, melted down and remade over and over again, It’s lifespan is infinite.
I live and work on the far south coast of NSW, Yuin Country, and have a small open studio and shop where I sell direct to the public.
I welcome commissions and love making custom specific works.
Please refer to my Instagram page for all my latest creations as well as process and progress pics and videos.
